Animatic: Campbell's Tomato Soup
Many things to consider with this video but really, the main idea stands as lots of short clips followed by slower shots to be a metaphor of how rich and smooth the soup is. Also, there is lots of noise followed by silence.
Ohai
This is James and this is my silly animatic. I might not use it. After Effects was fighting me last night and I just wanted to get it done...

Yes, the title is LOOOOONNNNNGGGG
Where the Monsters are in My Dreams is an experimental film with almost no plot but a bad trip. Written and Directed by Skybase (yes, that's me). Been doing some interesting research into human psychology and how externally injested material can affect the mind. This film is just part of it all.

District 9 Remapped
Lots of sounds being used from the Adobe Soundbooth library. Unfortunately, I don't have access to my sound effects library which kinda sucks. Either way here's District 9 remaped with new audio.
Did some panning, some convolution reverb effects were used. Of course, given 1 hour, this is as far as I can get.

- Redo the sound design for a video clip
- find a video clip online
- remove the audio
- replace the audio with music, sound effects
- replacing the dialog with ADR is a bonus but not required
- upload your video to the blog
- don't spend more than an hour or two on this
- Don't leave lab today without telling me your group and your video you will be analyzing for next week's group presentation
- Fill out the anonymous survey on My Courses. This is to help me get good feedback about the class. Please be honest. I will have no way of knowing who gave which answers.

Chase Scene
O hai. This is my midquarter video project dubbed "Chase Scene". I've wanted to make one for a while, always have them going through my head when I'm listening to music, so here it my attempt at one. Wish I had more time/understood the tools better, but I think for what it's worth this came out very nicely- actors involved did an excellent job with directions and were very patient. Did some color correcting in After Effects, and not as up to par as I'd like it to be (some of the color correcting effects skips out before the cuts are actually done). Also some shots ran longer than I intended them to be, and to get everything to go to the music, many had be sped up or shortened considerably. The desired emotional impact is the same as intended. :)
Without further ado, here is the Chase Scene. Let me know what you think.

The Graph...
For the Across the Universe scene I chose.
If anyone wants to be in the chase video (I don't need to have only 2 chasers, can have many more!) definitely let be know. If you can't provide blackish chase clothing, I'm sure I can help out. As well, if anyone has a suitcase I could use, it would be appreciated! :)
If you are interested in working with me on the chase, my email is jrn5627@rit.edu and my celly is 207-649-2006, and I can receive text. Thanks guys.
HVZ Animatic
A while ago some friends of mine and I were watching a series of action movies for background noise. Humans vs Zombies from the fall quarter had just ended so we started jokingly talking about what a Humans vs Zombies movie would look like. This is the result, a short trailer for that movie.
I cut some of the clips too short, so I'm missing about five seconds from this animatic.
The basic premise is that a military team is dropped into a city (for the sake of this film, it will be the RIT campus) to investigate why the city was put under quarantine. They run into an intern who was working for a doctor who apparently accidentally released a toxic chemical into the water for the city turning its residents into Zombies. The team get the intern to a safe location and run a series of missions to get him the supplies he needs to make a cure and the supplies need to get themselves extracted out of the city.

Note: The character's a fill in for now (his working name is Kai.) I don't know who's acting or not as of now. If anybody would like to take part, I'll appreciate it. If not, well, I have backup.
The Story:
One day Kai, alone in a café (or some sort of place) receives a call from a mysterious source. Curious, the boy decides to decider the code after noticing it was morse code. He finds that it said, "come find us." Moments after he decodes it, he gets another message, "Can you hear us?" where suddenly he hears a loud, obnoxious hum that seems to only affect him. He is quickly told to find the source of the sound by the mysterious messenger. Kai goes on a journey to find the source.
It's 3:10 AM and I'm falling asleep.

Chase Scene Animatic
First of all, don't laugh, I know it sucks. :P Took about an hour and half to think and draw out all of this, and even from here I can tell I'm going to be doing a lot more shots than this.
The basic idea is a chase scene. Everyone in the video will be wearing black (tracksuit or otherwise), and the suitcase I'm imagining will be metal, or also black. Thinking I might want to film it sepiatone or black and white, give it a rusty or grungy sort of feel. The song is a song on depthcore made by a friend of mine, I spliced it up a bit.
I want the film to appear in ways elegant and simplistic, with many long shots for the first few setting scenes. In scene 4 the camera will actually follow the guys as they are walking down the stairs (MS). The fact that the chaser is above the chasee in this scene will make the threat seem more present. In scene 5, The guy in the hoodie is waving at someone on the bridge (where the first scene is shot), beckoning him to join him in the chase. The camera will zoom into this person and then back out to watch the person leave. At this point no one is running yet.
Scene 7, our chasee realizes he's being followed and starts running to the SAU. In shot 9 the camera pans to follow the chasee, and then pan-zooms back to where the other two are in scene 10. The camera follows them as well.
Scene 11 is broken up into multiple parts but cut in one shot. The camera follows the two as they enter SAU and head into the lobby, and decide to go down the hallway, which ends up being the wrong move. The chasee appears and gives the suitcase to a person who has been in the scene and was first believe to have been a passerby.
Scenes 12 to 16 show the two chasers earlier, now behind the fireside lounge. The person who had the suitcase handed off too exits the Fireside Lounge, goes down the stairs, and is held at gunpoint and made to drop the suitcase. He is then executed. The last thing he sees (scene 16 is shot from his perspective) is the suitcase, and then one of the chasers as he waves goodbye and leaves. Then red is seen, then fade to black. Sad ending. :( All of these shots happen pretty quickly, but the last shot is suspended for a while in order to show resolution- the man accepts he is going to die.
I'm thinking dark, black clothes, and grungy. The gun will likely be a squirt gun painted over in black, and I will need a suitable suitcase. I've wanted to make a chase scene for a while now so I think it'll make a good assignment.

ODST Live Action short film
thingy from the website
So I decided to film about 35 seconds of the Halo 3 ODST Live action trailer. I'm not exactly thrilled with the video editing, but I was having too much fun with sounds and the filter to really focus on how to put the scenes together. Yes, I am aware that the filter dies at the end. I wasn't aware until I actually processed the video.
Things I'm not thrilled with:
1. I suck at directing, I always feel bad when I have to ask the actors to redo things, so I probably should have reshot some of the scenes.
2. I'm not really good at framing. (Hopefully I'll learn to fix this).
The song is Light of Aiden, which is from the actual ODST trailer. All the other sounds are from Sound Bible.
Mr. Paperbag Begins
Oh man.... I am so... not thrilled. This movie was constructed based on a scene from the Dark Knight. The Joker appears walking into a mob meeting. This is also the scene with the infamous "pencil trick."
Either way a couple things about this.
1. I couldn't observe myself from getting out of frame. It's ashame....
2. I randomly wrote the dialog. Don't ask what Mr. Paperbag is.
3. Thanks to everybody who helped out.
4. Lastly, it's not exactly to the shot list in the end.

Lab Assignment due today (Mar 17)
- Choose a scene from a film to analyze (1.5 to 2 minutes)
- Watch the scene first without analyzing to get the overall emotion
- Go to http://dougburnett.com/filmanalysis
- Draw the emotional level across the graph
- Watch the scene again and track the pacing, writing down the shot number and the length of the shot on a piece of paper.
- Chart those shot lengths on the same graph
- Watch the scene again and track the framing, again writing them down on the shots
- Chart those the shot frames on the same graph
- Take a snap shot of the graph to save it (on a Mac press "Command + Shift + 4" and drag across the region you want to capture. The image appears on your desktop.
- Using your shot sheet, recreate the film scene
- Edit your film in Final Cut Pro to match the pacing and framing of the original scene.
- Upload your film and film analysis screenshot to this blog
Pacing/Framing Analysis
Starwars Uncut
If Star Wars was filmed by an amateur instead of a real director, then it certainly wouldn't be the masterpiece we know it as today. But what if Star Wars were filmed by 480+ amateurs! It would be great, if for no reason other than that it would be absolutely ridiculous.
That is exactly the purpose of Star Wars Uncut.
http://www.starwarsuncut.com/
The premise of Star Wars Uncut is that all of "Star Wars: A New Hope" is split into fifteen second segments. Anyone can pick a segment of their choosing and make thier own filmed version of that segment in whatever manner they please (live action, stop motion, cartoons, whatever!). Eventually, all of the segments will be collected, the best will be chosen, and they'll all be strung together to make the entire movie.
I think this would be a sort of fun idea for one of our videos. Take a segment from Star Wars and remake it in your own creative way. I know that our videos have to be longer than fifteen seconds, but we could simply make a full scene and pick the best fifteen seconds to submit to Star Wars Uncut.
I was thinking that I could easily apply my Dungeons and Dragons idea to Star Wars Uncut.
Again, here's the link:

Nerdy Inspiration
I'm would definitely consider myself a nerd... at least when I have enough time to do anything but work. I'd really like to make a video that somehow revolves a nerdy interest; Dungeons and Dragons. I think it would be funny to reenact a well known scene as though it were being role-played by D&D nerds with their Mountain Dew, miniatures, pencils and dice, who are constantly arguing about the rules and pulling out handbooks. The characters would probably include some of the classic D&D player stereotypes:
1). The person who tries his hardest to bend the rules such that his character is far more powerful than he should be.
2). The person who really cares more about acting than about playing the game.
3). The thief, or some kind of similar character whose intentions are necessarily as good as the rest of his party's.
I think the biggest challenge would be making the comedy accessible to those who don't play D&D, which is the majority of people. I think as long as I make the humor more about the stereotypes and less about the lingo then most people will be able to relate.
I'm thinking something either from Shakespear or maybe "A Streetcar Named Desire"? Maybe even a fairytale of some kind?
